Plumbing Tips

Should I flush my water heater and how often?

Yes, it is a good idea to flush your water heater once per year. If it’s been awhile or has never been flushed, be prepared to change the drain valve. Debris builds up in the water heater and can clog the valve.

Is there any maintenance involved with a tankless water heater?

Yes, manufacturers recommend flushing with a pump once per year. This will remove any build-up which cuts down on efficiency.

Do frost-free hose bibs (outdoor faucets) need to be winterized?

Yes, remove hose so water can drain out of the hose bib. It might be a good idea to cover the bib with a Styrofoam cover to keep wind from blowing into the underside of the house.

Does a tankless water heater provide instant hot water at all of the faucets?

No, it will actually take a few seconds longer than a standard tank because it heats the water on demand.
