The Water Heater Challenge

Monday January 9, 2012

A local business recently called me for an estimate to replace one of their two 100 gallon water heaters.

It sounded easy enough until I ventured through the maze of kitchen equipment and up the stairs to the second floor mechanical room. The water heater was about 6 feet tall and weighs close to 500 pounds so bringing the old one down the stairs and the new one up quickly became plan B.

There was a nice rooftop access directly adjacent to the mechanical room so I soon realized this could be an opportunity to enlist the services of a crane. I’ve always thought they were pretty useful hanging around the big commercial construction sites. I hired the services of a local crane company, the project went off without a hitch and the new water heater was in the mechanical room in about an hour. Our backs were all very relieved at the end of the day.
